Cambodia, Khmer-empire (Angkor), lotus token 802-1369/1450 AD

Description:

Cast in tin with a high lead content. These pseudo-coins were produced in the Khmer empire of medieval Cambodia in their capital of Angkor but probably also in the provinces. They were used as small change, opium weights and gambling tokens.

This very well preserved specimen weighs 17.12 grams, which corresponds to a local weight of "3 units" in this time and place. There are also coins known struck to a weight standard of ½, 1 and 5 "units".
