Under 1. verdenskrig begyndte man at trykke nødpengesedler i Tyskland. De skulle afhjælpe den mangel på skillemønt, som krigen havde medført. Fra at være en nødforanstaltning udviklede nødpengene sig til at være et samlerobjekt, hvor der blev gjort meget ud af sedlernes udsmykning.
