Auction -> Danish coins after 1873 -> Item number 49122

Frederik IX, 1 krone 1960, VERY RARE - unknown till early 70ties.

Description:

Nice specimen.
The Copenhagen coindealer Kurt Mejlby got through strange ways in posseion of a number of these 1 kr pieces in the early 70ties. It was commonly known that he had a good connection to the CEO of the Royal Danish Mint in those days. He bought a number of 1 and 2 kr pieces in UNC and sold these retail and wholesale. One customer returned a 1960 piece and demanded the 1959 which he had paid for. 1959 was and is a better date but offcourse not rare like 1960. Mejlby checked his bag and found a small number of 1960ies. A precise number of coins distributed was never revealed and Kurt Meilby died 56 years old in 1989. Best guess is that there is something between 30 and 40 pieces in circulation.
