Maleren Poul Kastrup var oprindelig uddannet som maler. Besøgte gennem seks år teknisk tegne- og maleskole. Før han fandt sit egentlige felt, kastede han sig en tid over fortolkning af sociale motiver. Kastrup der er impressionist, har høstet anerkendelse for sin evne til at fortælle om rum og bevægelse med små sikre midler.
Poul Kastrup har udstillet i "Ung Kunst" kunstbygningen i Århus flere gange, Kunstnernes Påskeudstilling, Århus Rådhus og Rådhushallen. Kastrup har foretaget studierejser bl.a. til Sverige, Norge, Tyskland, Holland og Belgien samt Frankrig. Han har solgt til den Kgl. svenske marine, og er herhjemme repræsenteret i flere offentlige institutioner. Medlem af malersammenslutningen "De 10" . Han er omtalt i Ny biografisk kunstnerleksikon (Dansk billedkunst) Separatudstilling på Charlottenborg 1954.
